Naval Ravikant’s youtube podcast entitled “How to get rich” is one of my favourites. It’s an absolute brilliant piece.
What makes it even more special is that there’s ZERO ADS. It flows, you just listen.
When people post things to simply share deep learnings without compensation it means something. THEY DON’T NEED YOUR MONEY. They’ve made it. Read between the lines.
Naval admits the title is cheesy and it wasn’t his preference, but it’s what the audience wants.
OWN A PIECE OF THE PIE
One of the key points is about ownership
You need a piece of something. For me a job/career is an enabler. Your goal has to be TO OWN. Remember ASSETS generates future returns. Hours aren’t assets.
Unless your health is so amazing that you add years to your life. Then maybe you can work longer than others.
A salary sets you up for something that leads to ownership. For most it’s limited to promotions until you reach a level that gets you a seat at the table.
WORKING BACKWARDS
I like looking at my grandparents and older people. When you’re 60, sometimes even earlier, you probably can’t work on the same level and pace that you’re accustomed to. Your role should be different.
Some of us would want to retire and work on a passion project.
The problem is we don’t think about it. We believe we’ll be young forever. Then we end up becoming a burden to our children.
Here’s 10 things I do to give myself a better chance to be a happy 60 year old who can do whatever he wants to:
1. Get to know yourself – What you like and dislike
2. Grab a blank piece of paper and write random thoughts down to find yourself and discover what’s consuming your mind
3. Worry less – Life is uncertain, accept it. And ask yourself – “What’s the worst that can happen?”
4. Set up debit orders that takes money out of your account as soon as you get paid.
5. Ask people smarter than you questions
6. Diversify your relationships and investments
7. Invest in your children and family. If they have a dream and there’s evidence that they could reach it. Give them the best you can
8. Eat well and exercise every day
9. If you have a negative thought, replace it immediately
10. Don’t plan too far ahead then forget to live today
PATIENCE ELUDES US
I recently saw someone use some of my blog insights and just tailor it differently.
Not too long ago I had someone start a blog and they already have more readers than I do.
I’m human, I get disappointed.
But I’m writing for the improvement of my health and the few who are part of this weird tribe who seek a different life and way of thinking.
MY BEST IDEAS ARE STILL AHEAD OF ME.
Art takes time, and like me, don’t be too hard on yourself. Now go listen to Naval’s podcast and subscribe to my blog.
